Monitoring coral bleaching using Sentinel-2A data

The Great Barrier Reef is suffering dramatic levels of coral bleaching over large areas of the northern reefs. Researchers are now developing new methods to monitor and detect coral bleaching events using Europe’s Sentinel-2A satellite.

The project is led by EOMAP aquatic remote sensing company and implemented together with partners at the Remote Sensing Research Centre of Queensland University and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.

Satellite observations will be combined with field methods from aircraft and targeted dive surveys. Once the method is validated, it can be used on larger, regional scale for mapping and more effective monitoring of such areas.
